New song: Halcyon Days

Just before everyone is signing off for Christmas, we’d like to share a demo of a new song we have been working on. It’s current working-title is Halcyon Days (Star Sailor).

Maybe it’s the festive season, but this current version of Halcyon Days (Star Sailor) is drenched in a christmassy lull. There are 50’s Doo-wop vibes, sweet bells and a backing ‘bap’ choir. It certainly makes Halcyon Days (Star Sailor) stand out from previous Serene songs. No doubt, the version you hear is an early song sketch and still rough around its edges but we thought to share it with you anyway.

The title Halcyon Days (Star Sailor) derives from a word play for astronaut. Wikipedia explains this: “(…) A professional space traveler is called an astronaut. The term derives from the Greek words ástron, meaning “star”, and nautes, meaning “sailor”.” You can find the lyrics to Halcyon Days (Star Sailor) below and listen to the demo here.

The story behind the song is both a love song as much as it’s a tribute to those that aim to break frontiers, inspire and their commitment to positive change. Those that don’t fear to fail. Just on the off-chance one might assume this song is a tribute to the English band of the same name … well, it’s not.

As songwriting goes, lyrics and the music might change before we hit the recording studio in the new year. For the musos amongst you, the demo was entirely recorded on a MacBook, using Logic. The guitar is Cornel’s 70’s Fender ‘Deluxe Custom’ Telecaster through a battered vintage tremolo pedal into a small Vox AC4 amp. For the actual recording we hope to get a real Hammond organ to add a bit of a Sun Studios vibe to the tune.

Please check it out and let us know your thoughts. Have a wonderful ‘serene‘ Christmas!

Halcyon Days (Star Sailor)

Now that everything’s quiet
Show me how far you can go
Nothing’s not what it seems
I’m blinded and I fell for your dreams

Star Sailor good night

Now that everything’s quiet
Show me how far you can go
Nothing’s not what it seems
I’m blinded and I fell for your dreams

Days of daze in the clouds
Your love, your love lovely drowns
Those words, they cut like a knife
Those thoughts, how did they arrive?

Star Sailor shines bright
Starsailor good night
Star Sailor shines bright
My star going out of sight
